september 20

i really am bad at saving money. i'm at the the point now where i don't have much spending money left, so i feel guilty paying for events, but i have enough money that i keep buying food and keep draining my bank account. today may have been the epitome of that.

i went this morning to brooklyn label, a restaurant/coffee shop i noticed the other day. i can't tell here, without going in, what is a coffee shop and what is a restaurant, so i've finally come to the conclusion that they are usually the same thing in new york. too many times i've awkwardly walked to the counter to order when a server has told me to take a seat. the (other) problem with this is that i feel obligated to buy food when someone brings a cup of coffee to me at a table. so, i also bought an egg plate (the cheapest thing on the menu) at brooklyn label. the food was pretty good, if too expensive, but the mocha i had was fantastic.

afterwards, i tried to go to the brooklyn ice cream factory. the first time i tried to go, i forgot where it was. this time it was closed. so, instead, i went to a deli and bought a sandwich--because somehow in my mind a sandwich is a substitute for ice cream. i ate said sandwich in mcgolrick park and then spent some time at mccarren park reading.

then i found a free comedy show in the east village, so i went to check it out. i got there early so i wandered around the area, which appeared to be a mix of college-y bars and young-professional hangouts. it was a rather cool area, and it had a great place called the creperie. apparently the creperie was on or is going to be on "show down with bobby flay" and i can only hope that they shame that annoyed bastard. the apple crepe i bought gave me hope they would. i also watched a good old fashioned new york street ball game, but the only interesting part about it was that one of the players was wearing a suit and tie.

when i finally found (le) poisson rouge, a gallery/show venue that has multiple events going on every night and an impressive list of past performers, where the comedy show was being held, the bouncers didn't seem to know much about the show and they told me to come back in thirty minutes. that gave me the feeling i wouldn't miss much if i left, so i headed back home and had a couple beers over skype with mitch and tommy.

tomorrow will hopefully be more exciting. i'm going to a bar that is the official home of the new york branch of the tottenham hotspur fanclub to watch the game against arsenal and i think i'm going to go to the wavves show. they are playing with the babies, who are one of the bands fronted by cassie ramone, who i saw last night.
