today started off with me sitting around watching a movie, trying and failing to get my fortune read, and then wandering around greenpoint. i thought it would end as uneventfully as it began. but i'm writing this from a farm in vermont, so obviously i was wrong.
i had a phone interview with robert, the man who runs this farm, this morning. the place is neither the homestead (whose owner implied i had no integrity when i told him i wouldn't be coming) or the garlic farm (whose owner didn't call me to confirm plans like she said she would) but is instead a farm with a hundred or so chickens, a handful of mini-horses, a couple donkeys, a llama, possibly an alpaca, and two emu (yeah, totally). they also make honey and apple cider, in addition to the vegetable gardens they have. after i spoke to robert, i realized one of the problems would be scheduling, because i don't want to leave brooklyn until the 25th (or close to it) and he needs someone to work as soon as possible. so, since he comes into new york every week or so (to meet with clients for his glassblowing business, which is based in a studio a few miles from the farm) we decided that i should come up for the weekend to test things out and ride back with him next week. but, the train to vermont is sixty dollars, so, since i'm nearing poverty at an alarming rate, i headed out to new jersey to meet eric, robert's neighbor, who happened to be driving up tonight and caught a ride with him.
so, yes, i took a four hour drive with a stranger. and it was great. we stopped first at eric's house to pick up some stuff where i met his swedish au pair--because eric is cool like that--and then began the journey. he's an insurance salesman who only works ten or fifteen hours a week and who is obviously well-off. he was, in typical jersey fashion, direct and with little filter to the things he said, but was also very friendly and generally a great person to go on a drive with. he also bought me subway.
but, i just got in a little while ago and i'm too tired to coherently explain the rest of the day right now and since i may or may not be shoveling donkey shit tomorrow, i'mma go to sleep.
An adventure, radical! Buena suerte, muchacho!
