but i left after only one beer. you see, i finally got my hands on jonathan franzen's new book and all i really want to do now is read it. in fact, most of what i've done all day has been based on this book. after i bought it, i took the clerk's recommendation and went to the french restaurant a block down the road to read while i ate a delicious brie, mushroom, and tomato crepe. then i headed home to grab my computer before i went to cafe grumpy to "apply for jobs"--otherwise known as spending a few minutes on facebook, a few minutes on craigslist, and then reading for a few hours. but i make this promise to you, dear reader: i'll try my hardest to read in places where crazy things are most likely to happen so that i can have wonderful anecdotes to report back to you here.
i did, before i bought the book, go for a bike ride into manhattan. the ride over the williamsburg bridge is nothing short of glorious--my weak, heavy legs struggled to make it up and over, but once you crest the bridge, it's a terrific view and an extremely gratifying coast down onto delancey st and into the lower east side. riding through the city is also an experience worth taking advantage of. it requires a different mindset on danger and close calls with buses and/or giant trucks, but once you get into the flow of traffic, it just feels organic--like you're a part of this giant, living organism. it's not anything i've ever felt before. although, it happened to be a day when tons of people were moving in (the new school and nyu are both in that area), which did provide plenty of uhauls to dodge. but riding around amongst all those people, through all those intersecting lives--i felt weirdly alive. maybe that's the feeling of being a new yorker.
anyways, off to read. you should go buy freedom and do the same.
