i've learned so many things in the past day. i went back to r bar last night and talked to a different bartender for a while. this guy, whose name i can't remember, had all sorts of great things to say. he had multiple stories about doing e and happening upon naked people (one of them on the roof of a car parked on a random street in manhattan), which obviously makes me question this place's screening process for employees. but it also lead to a conversation where he told me about a few good websites to find electronica shows, as well ps 1, which is an old elementary school in queens that the museum of modern art took over and turned into a satellite facility that displays contemporary art. i'm not sure if that makes it a gallery as opposed to a museum, but whatever. it also hosts weekly parties in the courtyard throughout the summer. had i known about it/been here a few weeks ago, i could have seen james murphy from lcd soundsystem dj. alas, i'll just have to go next week and see whoever is playing then.
today, i went to go meet up with some people from couchsurfing in brighton beach--way down in south brooklyn by coney island--to go to a street fair. but this wasn't a normal street fair, oh no. brighton beach is little russia, so this was a russian street fair, which means so much. way more old men in mesh tank tops. way crazier things for sale--in addition to clothes and records and terribly cheap jewelry, there were tables selling some sort of medical cure-all, one of those "magical" chopping things usually hawked in informercials, and multiple tables of random tools strewn about with no discernible order or care. also 'the warrior,' who was either a 'roided out freak with a big belt or a champion wrestler from the motherland, was in attendance. most importantly though, there were delicious russian bakeries about. i got some cherry-filled pastry with a name i can't remember that in itself justified the hour long journey to get there.
which brings to mind the people i met--kseniya and her friend andrey. they were both super friendly and oh so helpful, especially because they were both russian and could tell me what the hell was going on. kseniya was also more jewish than i have ever imagined it possible for a person to be. she talked about israel all day, explained how she has a grudge against muslims and opposes the mosque currently being built in her neighborhood, and she was wearing a bracelet that was a series of interlocking stars of david. yeah, that jewish. andrew was a jew for jesus. but despite how little i had in common with them in that respect, it was still good fun.
i also met a girl on the subway heading down there who ended up being from pinehurst--because no matter where i go, i will always be surrounded by people hailing from the pines. but she was really helpful as well, telling me about some places to go and letting me know about this group of north carolina natives that meets around here. unfortunately their meeting place is a country club in park slope, so i doubt i'll fit in with them/have any desire to fit in with them. nonetheless, it's good to know there are other carolinians hiding amongst the new yorkers, just in case i ever attempt a coup.
