last night was the most fun i've had in columbia for a long time. i went to meet sydney and her roommates (lyle and jeff) downtown with the initial goal of trading labor for free cookies at the new insomniac cookie store. but before i got there, they found out the oven was broken, so we starting drinking instead. eventually the four of us started a small bike gang (okay, so maybe we just went on a bike ride together, but this is my story) and went to trade some peppers the roommates had grown for some home-made sweet jelly at some restaurant--you know, just your normal late night transaction. on the way back, we stopped at jeff and lyle's friend's house and drank expired wine and discussed how there was once a live birth in their bathtub.
twas a good last night in columbia, but, maybe (in part) because of that, it's strangely hard for me to imagine being in brooklyn tomorrow. even though i was there a week ago, it's weird to think that tomorrow afternoon i'll be living up there. it's not that i'm worried about it, really, it just seems out of the realm of possibility. this is one of those moments when what you've been working towards is starting to come together and it's like you never really thought it'd work out, you never truly accepted that it would happen. i'm not really sure what to expect anymore.
but starting work on monday will help, i think. oh, that's right--i have a job. i actually got it the first day i was in brooklyn, but i'm not really all that excited about it. i'll be doing grunt work--"field work" they call it--for the terribly named working families party. it's a progressive party that actually has a strong basis in new york. it was formed in the 90's as a collection of labor unions and community groups with the initial goal of raising the minimum wage. in theory it's all something i can get behind, but i tend to think that the things you must do in order to be successful as a political party always destroy your ideals, so i'm a bit hesitant to work for them. there also may be some fraud allegations against them. and i'm also worried that it's one of those groups that pesters people to sign petitions and give donations. but, i figure i'll try it out and see first hand before i decide.
see you tomorrow from my new home.
You're in Brooklyn going to cafe grumpy or whatever. so typical Matt ;). Glad you're safe and sound! Don't be a stranger to Carolina, please. Also, bring me back a sweet key chain.
